ABOUT US
The Department of Archaeology of Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University stands out in its mission to contribute significantly to the training of professionals with outstanding skills and to the dissemination of archaeological knowledge through research projects and fieldwork. Our country, as an important source of geography for national and multinational archaeological excavation campaigns and surveys, provides rich historical and cultural knowledge that has been continuously expanded from the Paleolithic period to the end of the Roman period. This knowledge is shared in the content of the courses offered in our department, making it a unique and reliable source of education in the field of archaeology.
MISSION - VISION
With its continuous stream of new findings and discoveries, the Anatolian region maintains its status as an essential geography in world cultural history. Our department is committed to continue the efforts and work of our scholars who have been educated in this field since the founding years of our Republic. In this regard, our primary mission is to increase the number of students who understand and promote the cultural richness and diversity of Anatolian and Thracian geography, thus effectively contributing to social awareness.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
Our department offers undergraduate courses taught by faculty members who are experts in Classical Archaeology, Protohistory and Near Eastern Archaeology, and Prehistoric Archaeology (Prehistory). A laboratory and a departmental library are available to our students. In our library, which started to take shape with the contributions of our faculty members in 2022, in addition to important monographic publications, periodicals such as Olba, Adalya, Varia Anatolica, Tüba-Ar, Gephyra, Colloquium Anatolicum, Anmed, Aegean Archaeology Journal are available for consultation by our students. In our laboratory, the study of examples of ceramic finds from different periods strengthens the small-find drawing abilities of our students, thereby increasing their knowledge and skills in the professional field. In addition to theoretical courses, our students are encouraged to experience methodological methods by participating in excavations and surveys of different periods, which are currently carried out throughout the country during the summer according to their needs.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Our graduates can be employed as expert archaeologists in public and private museums, conservation offices, municipalities, and the judiciary, depending on the requirements of the bachelor's degree in archaeology. In addition, licensed tourist guiding is a preferred field of work for graduates of the archaeology department.
ARCHAEOLOGY LAB
The Archaeology Laboratory is a laboratory where archaeological materials are examined and analyzed in terms of typology, technology, and function, and where drawing, photography, and restoration processes are carried out. It has a growing reference collection of archaeological materials from excavations and surface surveys that are used for comparison and sampling during courses. In addition, the reference collection of our laboratory will be diversified with the field projects that will be realized within the department in the near future. In addition to research, seminars on archaeological materials, drawings, and methods are held in the laboratory to enhance the theoretical and practical knowledge of our students.
